Vocational Qualification in Safety and Security (1.8.2018)

The objective of the vocational qualification in safety and security is that qualification holders have extensive basic knowledge and skills needed to work, specialise, or pursue further education in all fields of the safety and security sector, which comprise technical sector tasks, logistics tasks, environmental tasks, service tasks, and private security sector tasks.

The vocational qualification in safety and security provides qualification holders with basic capabilities for improving their vocational skills. Qualification holders are reliable, quality conscious, service oriented, and cooperative, and act out of their own initiative. They are able to apply the knowledge and skills they have learned in varying workplace situations in the service of different employers or as entrepreneurs. They can see their work as part of a larger whole and take the tasks of partners into account in their work.

Qualification holders must be able to cope in a multicultural work environment and manage the interactions related to the work community and work performances in both national languages and at least one foreign language. They must know how to follow methods that support the sustainable development of the environment in their work. They must know how to use the technical devices and equipment needed in their work and have the capabilities needed in the information society to use the constantly developing information and communication technology to acquire information and for interactive communication.

Qualification holders follow instructions in their work, but they must also be resourceful, able to take initiative, and able to anticipate situations and make independent decisions. As an employee or an entrepreneur, they must be able to serve customers and take the customers’ needs into account. They must be familiar with the rights and obligations of the customer and the consumer and take them into consideration in their work.

Qualification holders must be able to comply with quality management systems in their work. They need to have an idea of the international and national competitiveness of the security sector and the link between quality and costs, and they must always act responsibly in their work. Qualification holders must know how to look after their health and thus maintain their work ability and functional capacity. They must be aware of the physical and psychological health risks of their work and know how to prevent them. They must be able to look after their occupational safety and comply with occupational safety regulations and guidelines.

Qualification holders must have the learning-to-learn skills required for lifelong learning, including an ability to assess their learning and competence, evaluate, and structure information, plan their studies, and set themselves learning targets. They must also have the willingness and motivation to develop themselves continuously. Qualification holders must have the ability to cope with new and different situations flexibly and to act innovatively. They must be able to find solutions to problems.

Qualification holders must have a diverse set of skills for coping with communication situations in the workplace. They must be able to work together with others, also in a multicultural work environment. Qualification holders must be able to act responsibly, fairly and in compliance with agreements. They must observe the professional ethics and professional secrecy of the safety and security sector. They must be capable of tolerance and an equitable attitude towards other people. They must be able to take others into consideration and accept people’s different emotions and behaviours. They must also keep their own emotions under control in the work community and in customer service and other interactive situations. They must appreciate their profession and be motivated to develop themselves and their work.
