Vocational Qualification in Equipment Maintenance (1.8.2018)
Instrument technicians know how to plan their work and act in the different stages of the equipment maintenance process following the principles of quality work and sustainable development. Instrument technicians are able to use the machines and devices required in their work and keep them in working order. Instrument technicians are able to take advantage of their language proficiency, information and communication technologies, digital operating methods. and the automation made possible by their working environment. They are capable of working in multiprofessional co-operation and in customer service. Qualification holders have a basic grasp of business activities and can promote the profitability of the business activities in their workplace. Instrument technicians are able to develop and productise different service concepts related to their work. Aseptic working methods, compliance with good hygiene practices, and the prevention of infections by different methods are key areas in the competence of instrument technicians regardless of their working environment. Checking, cleaning, disinfecting, sterilising, packing, storing, storage, and transporting of the equipment form the core content of the equipment maintenance process. Instrument technicians know the names, properties, special markings, and maintenance procedures of each piece of equipment they maintain. They know how to handle the piece of equipment correctly and safely.
Qualification holders know how to observe the national and international rules and regulations concerning equipment maintenance, have good manners, and abide by good operating practices. They are familiar with occupational safety and health regulations and instructions and comply with vocational ethics, data protection, confidentiality, and the regulations on consumer protection in their work. They work ergonomically and contribute to wellbeing at the workplace.
Qualification holders value and develop their own work and their vocational field. They have a realistic understanding of their competence. They develop their vocational skills in accordance with the principles of life-long learning. They evaluate and analyse their work, set learning goals for themselves, and take advantage of continuing vocational education and training. They have the capabilities to continue to further studies.

The vocational qualification in equipment maintenance is composed of vocational units (145 competence points) and common units (35 competence points). The scope of a vocational qualification is 180 competence points. The vocational qualification in equipment maintenance comprises five compulsory units: Prevention of infections in equipment maintenance, Cleaning and disinfection of instruments, Working in the instrument packing process, Sterilisation of instruments, and Process control, utilisation of production systems and quality work in instrument maintenance. The optional qualification modules are Equipment maintenance in oral healthcare, Equipment maintenance in procedural units, Equipment maintenance in clinical units and food and chemical industry units, and Logistics services in healthcare.
The common units are Communication and interaction skills, Competence in mathematics and natural sciences, and Society and working life skills
The scope of optional studies in the qualification is 25 competence points.
The qualification title produced by the vocational qualification in equipment maintenance is instrument technician.
