Vocational Qualification in the Process Industry (1.8.2018) |
Qualification holders have the basic competencies for working in different operating and maintenance management tasks of the process industry in different fields.
Qualification holders are able to:
- use the machines and equipment used in the manufacturing and packaging processes of different products according to safety instructions
- use the process control automation systems and monitor the operation of process and field devices
- monitor, control, and regulate the processes in their work area
- ensure that processes run without malfunctions
- perform operator-driven maintenance.
Competence area of biotechnology, process operator
Qualification holders know how to operate the machinery and equipment used in biotechnological manufacturing or packaging processes. They know how to use process control automation systems and monitor the operation of process and field devices as well as monitor, control, and regulate processes in their work area. They are able to monitor the condition of the equipment and ensure that processes run without malfunctions. They know how to perform tasks related to lubrication maintenance and other service operations on process and automation field devices. They are able to use animal and plant cells, microbes and genetically modified organisms appropriately in their work and work in compliance with the requirements of cleanroom classifications.
Competence area of the chemical industry, process operator
Process operators know how to use chemical, mechanical, and thermal processes and operate environmental technology and mass transfer unit processes. They know how to use process control automation systems and monitor the operation of process and field devices as well as monitor, control, and regulate processes in their work area. They are able to monitor the condition of the equipment and ensure that processes run without malfunctions. They know how to perform tasks related to lubrication maintenance and other service operations on process and automation field devices.
Competence area of metal refining, process operator
Process operators know the main stages of metal manufacture or refining from the acquisition of raw materials to final products and can work in the metal manufacture or refining process. They are familiar with process control or maintenance management and have specialised in one or two parts of the process.
Competence area of the paper industry, process operator
Process operators are familiar with pulp manufacturing and the different phases of paper and cardboard manufacturing and are able to work in some tasks or process phases in the manufacturing or refining of pulp, paper, or cardboard. They are able to monitor the condition of the equipment, ensure that processes run without malfunctions and determine the causes of possible malfunctions. They know how to perform tasks related to lubrication maintenance and other service operations on process and automation field devices.
Competence area of casting technology, foundry patternmaker
Foundry patternmakers have basic knowledge of casting, are familiar with the materials used and know how to use the required machines, equipment, and tools. They are able to work in one of the process phases in foundries, such as the manufacture of moulds and mould cores, casting, or the finishing and quality assurance of castings. They have specialised in the use of dead moulds or permanent moulds. Their tasks also include servicing, cleaning, and checking the tools used.

The vocational qualification comprises 180 competence points. Vocational qualifications include vocational units (145 competence points) and common units (35 competence points). The common units are: Communication and interaction skills, Competence in mathematics and natural sciences, and Society and working life skills.
In the vocational qualification in the process industry, the scope of compulsory units is 105 competence points and the scope of optional units 40 competence points in the competence areas of biotechnology, the chemical industry, metal refining and the paper industry.
The scope of compulsory units in the competence area of casting technology is 45 competence points. The optional units have been divided into two groups, from which students choose a total of 120 competence points according to the rule for the composition of the qualification.
The vocational qualification in the process industry includes five competence areas and two qualification titles:
- competence area of biotechnology (Process Operator)
- competence area of the chemical industry (Process Operator)
- competence area of metal refining (Process Operator)
- competence area of the paper industry (Process Operator) and
- competence area of casting technology (Foundry Patternmaker).
