Vocational Qualification in Tourism Industry (1.8.2018) | Competence area of Retail Travel Services

Qualification holders are able to

  • act in customer service tasks in sales, accommodation, or implementation of tourism services in the tourism sector
  • work with a socially responsible approach and serve Finnish and foreign customers in a customer-oriented manner
  • utilise good interaction skills, language proficiency, and knowledge of cultures
  • work in a sales-minded, customer service oriented, and quality conscious manner and profitably, productively, and responsibly as well as operate in compliance with sustainable operating practices.

The students may specialise in work tasks in hotel reception, the sales of tourism services, or the implementation of tourism services.

A receptionist who has completed the qualification knows how to

  • work in customer service tasks in tourist accommodation establishments with different business ideas
  • book rooms for customers and check customers in and out
  • present and sell products and services
  • guide customers in using local tourism services.

A travel adviser who has completed the qualification knows how to

  • work in sales and advisory tasks
  • design, productise, market, and sell tourism products and services
  • guide and instruct customers in buying different tourism services.

A tourism activities organiser who has completed the qualification knows how to

  • work in tasks involving producing tourism activities and customer service related to the productisation and implementation of tourism services
  • design, market, sell, and implement tourism activities
  • look after and care for the animals, tools, equipment, and operating environments needed in the services.

The scope of the Vocational Qualification in Tourism Industry is 180 competence points. The qualification is composed of vocational units (145 competence points) and common units (35 competence points). The qualification contains one compulsory unit, customer service in the tourism industry (30 competence points), one compulsory unit of the selected competence area (40 competence points in total), and optional units amounting to 75 competence points.

The Vocational Qualification in Tourism Industry comprises three competence areas and qualification titles:

  • competence area of accommodation services (receptionist)
  • competence area of retail travel services (travel adviser) and
  • competence area of tourism services (tourism activities organiser).

Compulsory unit of another competence area
The students may include in their qualification the compulsory unit of another competence area of this vocational upper secondary qualification. Regardless of the scope of the unit to be included in the qualification, its scope in this case is at maximum 20 competence points.

A unit based on local competence requirements
The unit contains competence that meets local labour market needs. The competence must be suitable for the needs of more than one workplace. The education provider names the unit on the basis of operational entities in the world of work and determines its scope in competence points. The education provider defines the competence requirements and the assessment of competence in a similar manner as for vocational units.

A unit from another vocational upper secondary qualification, further qualification or specialist qualification
A unit from another vocational upper secondary qualification, further qualification or specialist qualification can be included in the qualification. Regardless of the scope of the unit to be included in the qualification, its scope in this case is at maximum 15 competence points.

Common Units

The scope of communication and interaction competence is at least 11 competence points, the scope of mathematics and science competence is at least 6 competence points, and the scope of citizenship and working life competence is at least 9 competence points. The common units must also contain optional targeted learning outcomes from one of several common units and part(s) of units selected by the student, fulfilling the scope of 35 competence points of common units.

Optional targeted learning outcomes of common units

The optional targeted learning outcomes of common units may be other optional targeted learning outcomes determined in the qualification requirements or decided by the education provider that support the outcomes determined for that unit and its parts in the qualification requirements. The student's prior learning may also be included in optional targeted learning outcomes if it supports the targeted learning outcomes determined for that unit and its parts in the qualification requirements.
